RIP: Sadness at death of talented choir leader who worked for many years with Trebor sweets

The Late Tom McConnell, Drumshinny, Arva, Co Cavan and formerly of Motherwell, Scotland and Dunnington, England

The death occurred peacefully at home in Drumshinney, Arva of Mr Thomas (Tom) Mc Connell with his family at his bedside on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Originally from Motherwell, Scotland and for over 50 years Dunnington, York, England, Tom moved to Arva to live with his beloved wife Jean (deceased May 2023) and to be cared for by his son David and daughter-in-law Dympna (nee Brady).

Though impaired in later years by dementia Tom was still known for his smile and was a familiar figure to visitors around the kitchen table and also about the town in Arva, in the car or occasionally the shops.

Over his long life he was always happiest with family and worked for many years in sales with Trebor Sweets before his retirement. He also used his musical talents in playing the organ and leading a choir at Church both in York and Scotland.

Tom reposed at his home and was taken the following day to Lakelands Funeral Home for Funeral Service followed by Cremation.

Tom was predeceased by his wife Jean, sisters Elizabeth and Jean and is sadly missed by his sons David (Dympna), Nelson (Jo), Bruce and the wider family and friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.

The family would especially like to thank the care given to Tom by Breda Coyle (Alzheimer Society) and also Carmel Conneely who called out many times with help and advice when needed.
