Gardaí probe second car theft in Longford inside 48 hours

Car theft

Carrickboy, the scene of Tuesday's alleged theft of a BMW

Gardaí have begun an investigation after a car was stolen in south Longford overnight.

A high powered black coloured BMW was stolen in the Carrickboy area sometime between 1:30am and 6am on Tuesday morning, prompting gardaí to commence an investigation.

A garda spokesperson confirmed the incident and said an investigation had so far, yielded no results.

"Gardaí received a report on Tuesday 8th August 2023, of the unauthorised taking of a car from the Carrickboy area of Co Longford," said the spokesperson.

It comes after gardaí launched a separate investigation into the alleged theft of a black VW Golf from outside the grounds of Mostrim GAA's Devine Park last night.

That incident took place shortly after 7pm last night as Delvin and Mostrim clashed in a hurling challenge match.

It was during that period that a male suspect is believed to have rummaged through a number of training bags belonging to players from both teams in the changing rooms area.

A short time later, the man made off in the aforementioned VW Golf after taking the car keys, cash, wedding ring and other items belonging to the said victim.

The car itself was later found at an undisclosed location in Longford town as gardaí now focus on identifying a prime suspect in the case.

"Gardaí are investigating an incident of theft and subsequent unauthorised taking of a vehicle in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford yesterday evening, Wednesday 9th August 2023," said a spokesperson.

"The incident occurred at a sportsground in the town shortly after 7:00pm.

"The vehicle was later recovered in Longford town at approximately 12:30am in the early hours of Thursday 10th August. It has been removed from the scene for a technical examination.

"No arrests have been made at this time. Investigations are ongoing."
