Edgeworthstown's Devine Park GAA grounds
Gardaí are on the hunt for a brazen thief who entered a GAA grounds in Co Longford last night to steal a car along with a string of personal items from players' bags during the course of a match.
The incident took place at Edgeworthstown's Devine Park shortly after 7pm.
It's understood a male suspect entered the grounds and dressing rooms while a number of players from Delvin and Mostrim took part in a hurling challenge match.
The raider subsequently took a number of personal items from training bags and car keys belonging to a 10 registered black VW Golf.
The car was later found in Longford town some five hours later and has since underwent a technical examination.
Detectives are hoping those enquiries will prove crucial in identifying and bringing about an arrest.
The Leader also understands CCTV footage is currently being examined as part of that investigation.
"Gardaí are investigating an incident of theft and subsequent unauthorised taking of a vehicle in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford yesterday evening, Wednesday 9th August 2023," said a garda spokesperson.
"The incident occurred at a sportsground in the town shortly after 7:00pm.
"The vehicle was later recovered in Longford town at approximately 12:30am in the early hours of Thursday 10th August. It has been removed from the scene for a technical examination.
"No arrests have been made at this time. Investigations are ongoing."
