Cllr Gerry Hagan
Road marking and lineage issues took up a significant chunk of a recent council meeting as the issue of road safety took precedence.
Fine Gael Cllr Gerry Hagan tabled a motion at last week's meeting of Longford Municipal District for road marking reinstatements to be carried out on all loading bays in the county town.
This, he said, was due to a number of loading bay markings having been warn away in an episode whic h had seen a number of cars park in such spaces as a consequence.
His Fianna Fáil opposite number Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi similarly sought approval for road markings and signage at Derryharrow Cross for the guidance of road users.
“At the minute there is no marking to show the end of that road to indicate for cars to stop and then we have to keep into closer to the junction and it does cause cars to veer to the opposite lane,” she said.
“There is a bit of safety issue there at the minute and clear signage and markings would certainly help road users.”
Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Monaghan said it was his belief the topic of road markings and signage had cropped up on at least “three to four” times over the past couple of months.
He suggested the council look at carrying out an audit or perhaps engaging with the local authority's outdoor staff to try and assemble a plan of action to address the issue.
On the topic of Cllr Adejinmi's motion, Director of Services John Brannigan said while signage was in existence, the junction's stop signs would be renewed and kept under review.
