“The sun came out and the cars flooded in,” organiser Niall Gerety said as the Old School New School (OSNS) Motor Show marked their sixth year in existence last weekend.
The vintage and modified motor show returned to St Mel’s College ground with one of the biggest shows of its kind in the country.
Many of the cars are very expensive and can be sensitive to the climatic conditions: “We were concerned about the weather,” Niall told the Leader, “but we had over 300 cars on exhibition over the Saturday and Sunday. We saw over 2,000 spectators visit us. That includes the car driver and exhibitors. It was a great success.”
The Old School New School organisers had to adapt to the challenges presented: “A big thank you to St Mel's College. Because of the rain we could not have our kids' activities outside. They gave us access to the Sports Halls on the grounds. We filled it with kiddies disco, face painting, and balloon modelling. We also had a gaming van, with 10 consoles in the back of it. It worked out very well.”
There was a great reaction to the OSNS event: “I think we shocked the people of Longford with what we had on display. People came in and spoke of the professionalism of the show. Nobody had any issues, which is always the way we want it.”
A major part of the event is supporting local charities. Last year the organisers presented a cheque for €4,000 to DePaul, Longford and Ellie's Wish To Walk. Longford’s OSNS Motor Show has raised over €50,000 for charity since it began.
Niall said they are still engaged in the clean up of the site and have yet to tot up how much they have raised for charity. The organiser said they will be making a formal presentation of the autism unit of St Mel's College later in the year.
A videographer was on hand to document the show: “We are putting together an official “after movie” of the show that will be on our social media platforms. It will give people a taste of what we did,” Niall said.
Plans are already in train for next year's Old School New School show, with Sunday, July 14 pencilled in for the event.
