Longford women accused of carrying out a string of transactions while using stolen Revolut card

Longford Courthouse

Two Longford mothers have appeared in court charged with fraudulently carrying out a string of transactions while using a stolen Revolut card.

Sylvia Nevin (33) 41 Grian Ard, Ardnacassa, Longford and Winnifred Nevin, also known as Winnie Mooney, 4 Camlin View, Longford were both charged with a series of theft related offences at several shops in Longford town on March 6.

They included thefts at Fresh Today, Longford Shopping Centre, Day Today, The Kiosk, 57 Dublin Street, Longford, Iceland, Athlone Road, Longford, Mr Price, Athlone Road, Longford, The Checkout, Ballymahon Street, Longford and Tesco, Longford Shopping Centre.

All of the alleged incidents, the court heard, resulted in the loss of €234 to the injured party.

Sgt Mark Mahon, for the prosecution, said the card had been taken from the alleged male victim inside the doors of a local fastfood restaurant.

“This matter relates to an incident where a revolut card was obtained from the injured party in a takeaway in Longford and gardaí found out there was a number of transactions on that revolut card,” he said.

“The total amount the injured party was out of pocket was €234.76. It would appear there would be seven different transactions that brought it up to that amount at various different locations.”

Judge Bernadette Owens accepted jurisdiction in the case, meaning the matter could be dealt with at District Court level.

Solicitor for both women, Bríd Mimnagh said Ms Mooney, or Ms Nevin as she is otherwise known, was a single mother of four with her co-accused being a widow mother of three young children.

Ms Mimnagh said she would be seeking an adjournment to allow for a fully prepared submission of mitigation on foot of a guilty plea which was to be entered by both women.

Legal aid was also granted to both accused, who were remanded on bail until a sitting of Longford District Court on July 18.

It’s expected that on that date a victim impact statement from those shops affected will also be handed into the court.
