Quarry company applies for planning permission to extend north Longford operation

Longford County Council planners are considering an application by quarry company Lagan Materials Ltd, who trade as Breedon Ireland, for plans in respect of their Aughnacliffe operation.

Lagan Materials have applied for permission in respect of the extraction of rock over an area of c.14.2 hectares at Aghamore Upper and Derreenavoggy townlands, Aughnacliffe, Longford.

This consists of a lateral southerly extension to, and a deepening of, the existing quarry to a final depth of 114mAOD.

Also sought is permission for the construction of internal haul roads, earthen screening bunds and storage landforms, and the demolition of farm outbuildings.

The plans include the restoration of the site to biodiversity after use, primarily in the form of a waterbody, and all ancillary works within an overall application area of 36.8ha.

The planning application will be accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR).

The planners received the application on May 10 with the anticipated decision date estimated at July 4, 2023.

Meanwhile Bord Pleanála are reviewing another application in respect of the quarry operation at Aghamore Upper, Aughnacliffe, Longford.

Applicant Lagan Materials Ltd's permission for an aggregate storage shed and partial realignment of private laneway, within an application area of 0.2ha, at the existing quarry landholding is subject to a third party appeal by Wild Ireland Defence CLG.

That planning appeal was lodged on May 9 last with the planning authority indicating a decision by September 11, 2023.
