There was double golden glory for Longford Community Games teams at the Leinster Community Games Indoor Finals which were held at various venues in the county on Saturday, April 29.
The Drumlish / Ballinamuck U-13 Boys and Killoe U-13 Girls soccer teams were triumphant in their respective finals and they will progress to represent their county and province at the National Community Games Finals. READ MORE BELOW PHOTO
It was a historic win for Drumlish Ballinamuck in the Leinster Indoor Community Games U13 soccer final where they overcame Hacketstown of Carlow in the final. Coached by Bobby Hilton and Ian Maher, the winning squad members were Darragh Murphy, Cian Lawlor, Ryan Connolly, Fionn McCormack Crowe, James Hilton, Oisín Kiernan and Donncha McKeon.
The Killoe girls won a nail biting semi-final against Baylin Mount Temple of Westmeath by 3-2 and in the final the Longford standard bearers emerged as 7-5 winners over Aughrim of Wicklow. Coached by Tom Quinn and Mark Leonard, the Killoe squad comprised Megan Collum Smith, Clodagh McKenna, Saoirse Browne, Laura Quinn, Meabh Fitzsimmons, Sophie Coyle, Hannah Tully and captain Grace Quinn.
Four Longford basketball teams secured silver medals. The Newtowncashel U-16 Boys and Girls sides were unlucky to be defeated in their finals by Portlaoise (Laois) and Malahide (Dublin), respectively. The Ballymahon / Forgney U-11 Mixed and Dromard U-13 Boys squads also captured provincial silver medals. Ballymahon / Forgney went down to Portlaoise, while Dromard were defeated by Kildare opponents Johnstown Kill.
Clonguish reached the Boys U-15 Futsal Final and they had to be content with silver medals as they were denied victory by Stepaside (Dublin).
There were four other Longford teams in semi-final action on the day - Colmcille U-13 Girls basketball, Clonguish U-13 boys and girls Futsal teams and the Kenagh U-15 Girls Futsal side.
Longford will also play host to Weekend Two of the Leinster Finals which are scheduled to take place on July 29. It is expected that there will be two hundred teams and up to 2,000 participants from across the province arriving in Longford for the outdoor events.
Longford Community Games expressed thanks to everyone who made the Indoor Finals on April 29 such a success - the venues who facilitated the competitions, the referees who worked hard throughout the day, the security team and the Civil Defence Team, parents, team managers, volunteers and all of the wonderful participants who gave of their very best and represented their area and county with great pride.
