Cllr PJ Reilly
There have been renewed calls this week for one of the country's largest banks to open a branch in Granard.
Fianna Fáil Cllr PJ Reilly (pictured) has urged council bosses to write to senior executives aligned to Permanent TSB to consider expanding its operations to the north Longford town.
It comes almost 18 months since the town's sole remaining mainstream institution, Bank of Ireland, closed its doors for the last times.
“I am asking the council to write to Permanent TSB to open a branch in Granard because it is left with no banking service,” he said.
“We had Ulster Bank in the town for generations and it closed.
“Bank of Ireland gave a commitment that they would remain in Granard but unfortunately in the last 12 months the Bank of Ireland has closed as well.
“Having said that and while we have an excellent post office service there and Granard Credit Union, a rural town like Granard needs a bank.”
