Cycling routes, pedestrian crossings and new walking routes all figure largely in a €2.5m investment Longford is to receive under the State's Active Travel Scheme

Longford's public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure is set for a €2.5m cash injection.

Fourteen projects across the county will share an eight figure pot in an investment which will see the development of segregated cycling lanes, widened footpaths as well as new walking and pedestrian crossings.

The two largest benefactors include a substantial pedestrian and cycle scheme along Longford town's Battery Road with a six figure allocation also going towards new pathway and cycling facilities on the outskirts of Ennybegs village in Killoe.
Longford politicians have likewise been quick to endorse the news.

Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty said the monies would go a long way towards enhancing accessibility for school and work journeys while Fine Gael Senator said described the funding as “immense”.
