Committed' Carrigy hits back at criticism by Longford Sinn Féin candidate

Senator Micheál Carrigy and Barry Campion

As the General Election enters the last few days of campaigning the barbs are flying between the candidates.

Sinn Féin hopeful, Barry Campion, has criticised Fine Gael on profligate spending and delivery timelines, while Senator Micháel Carrigy has hit back questioning the former's commitment to Longford.

“Senator Carrigy and Taoiseach Simon Harris toured Longford town last Tuesday where they skipped by St Christopher's and made lots of 'new energy' promises for regeneration and a new family resource centre. Neither of these possesses a new energy or a record for delivering on time or on budget products,” Mr Campion said in a statement.

From criticism of the National Children's Hospital to local spends on community projects the Sinn Féin candidate pulled no punches in his criticism of his opponent.

“The Senator's record on waste and late delivery of projects also reflects that of his 'new energy' Taoiseach,” Mr Campion asserted, “A €500,000 spend on the recently opened and recently closed Rose Cottage Café has left Ballinalee with a half a million euro white elephant.

“Also in Ballinalee a long promised community garden has had extensions to funding extended at least twice, funding worth €190,000.”

He concluded: “It's not up to local or national politicians to pursue local projects that might benefit them at the ballot box.”

Replying to the accusations Senator Carrigy pointed to his record in delivering projects:

“What have Sorca Clarke or Barry Campion ever done for any community or organisation in Longford over the last number of years since they moved here?”

“The people of Longford should not waste their vote on people who do nothing for them. I have thirty years of experience in delivering for communities in Longford and I am committed to making it a better place.”
