Fianna Fáil TD Joe Flaherty: Local firm appointed main contractors for three year build at St Joseph's, Longford
The appointment of local building firm, GEM Construction as the contractor for a major extension at St Joseph’s Care Centre Campus on the Dublin Road in Longford town has been welcomed by Joe Flaherty TD.
The works will provide a new state of the art 43 bed unit care facility over a 30 month build period and 'crucially', Deputy Flaherty commented, "the works will also include a 2nd palliative care bed for the county."
The Longford-Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD welcomed the start of the work and also confirmed that plans for the refurbishment of the county clinic are also progressing.

He explained: “This will provide for the expansion of existing services including dental, orthodontic, MRHM and paediatric, gynae and surgical clinics. This aspect of the project currently at appraisal stage but will be a significant step forward for local health care and all the time we continue working towards a minor injury unit for the county also on the St Joseph’s campus.”
Deputy Flaherty also provided an update on the planned primary care centre for Edgeworthstown and said that the HSE are finalising for the delivery of a primary care centre through a private developer.

In relation to the further healthcare projects in Co Longford, he said plans are also advancing for the replacement of the existing Ashford House support hostel for the community based care for mental health patients. Plans are in place for a new nine bed state of the art support hostel on a new stie in Longford town.

Welcoming the appointment of GEM Construction to the St Joseph’s project, Deputy Flaherty recalled that the company’s last significant project in Longford town was the refurbishment of St Mel’s Cathedral.
