Over €1m in funding for Longford animal charities

Fianna Fáil TD for Longford-Westmeath Joe Flaherty

Local Fianna Fail TD Joe Flaherty has welcomed confirmation from his party colleague, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, that three Longford charities are set to receive total funding worth over €1 million.
Some 101 animal welfare charities nationwide are in line for funding of €6 million.
Deputy Flaherty said: “I am delighted to see the ISPCA Animal Centre in Derryglogher, Keenagh has been awarded €931,750 - it is one of the highest funding allocations in the country.
"I'm also particularly pleased to see the Hungry Horse Outside charity in Newtownforbes receiving €140,250 and Longford SPCA on Market Square being allocated €7,000. I want to congratulate and commend the local volunteers who work so tirelessly to help animals in need.
The Longford TD added: "The €6 million being awarded to 101 organisations in total maintains the highest ever allocation from last year in recognition that 2024 has been a challenging year for charities involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of animals.
“My party colleague in government Minister McConalogue has championed these grants and it underlines Fianna Fáil's commitment to supporting these organisations in the vital work they do protecting, rescuing and taking care of animals, as well as providing education and guidance to prevent welfare problems from arising in the future.
“I would like to thank animal charity staff and volunteers for their hard work and inspiring dedication.”
Minister McConalogue said: “I’d like to acknowledge the important work carried out, often in very challenging circumstances, by animal welfare organisations and their dedicated volunteers and staff across Ireland.
"Animal welfare charities play a crucial role in helping animals in need, educating people, and raising public awareness and improving animal welfare. Responsible pet ownership campaigns can help to reduce the number of dogs abandoned or surrendered, and therefore can reduce the pressure on dog shelters and charities. For this reason, the Programme for Government included a commitment to promote responsible pet ownership.”
In advance of the Christmas season, the Minister also reminded the public that pet ownership is a long time commitment with financial and lifestyle commitments that need to be considered.
