Cnoc Mhuire, Granard suffered a disappointing six-point defeat away to Offaly outfit Gallen Community School, Ferbane in Round 1 of the Leinster Vocational Schools Junior (U-16) Football Championship on Monday of last week. The Granard school relied heavily on the shooting ability of Aaron Brady, who fired over five of his sides six points – four from frees. Gallen engineered their first goal after eight minutes. Ryan Heavin picked out Colin Kenny with a perfect pass and Kenny planted the ball in the back of the Cnoc Mhuire net. With ten minutes remaining in the first half Gallen found the net yet again with Heavin hitting the target in shooting past opposing keeper Ruairi Harkin. Cnoc Mhuire tried hard to put some respectability back on the scoreboard. A third free from Aaron Brady and a well-taken goal from Mark Kiernan closed the gap in the second half but the damage was already done. CNOC MHUIRE: Ruairi Harkin; Andrei Bogdan, Luke Meehan, James Mooney; Colm O’Reilly, Cian Brady, Aaron Brady; Barry McKiernan (0-1), Conor Mallon; Russell Brady, Aaron Brady (0-5, four frees), Cathal Lynch; Jason Matthews, Shane Sheils, Mark Kiernan (1-0).
Subs: Niall McGahern for C Lynch; Shane McGarry for J Mooney; Cian O’Reilly for R Brady.
