St. Mel’s U-14s march on

St. Mel’s played St. Mary’s, Mullingar at the Ardagh grounds on Wednesday of last week to decide who would top the group in the North Leinster Colleges U-14 ‘A’ Football Championship with the sides having scored convincing wins earlier in the competition.
St. Mel’s played with the wind in the first half and following a point from James Bracken, a decisive moment materialised when the Longford college were awarded a penalty. Fergal Farrell was fouled in the square and Clayton Finn made no mistake from the spot kick in finding the back of the net.

A second goal followed for St. Mel’s through James Bracken and Clayton Finn then converted a well struck ‘45 before St. Mary’s replied with a brace of points.

Against the breeze in the second half, St. Mel’s started well with Paddy Duggan and Sean Creevy scoring points but St. Mary’s kept their hopes alive with two quick goals to close the gap. St. Mel’s were now under pressure but substitute Gerard Flynn scored a great goal to clinch the victory. 
With goalkeeper Dylan Smith in fine form, St. Mel’s consolidated their firm grip on the game and overall it was a good team performance as they advanced to meet St. Joseph’s, Rochfortbridge in the semi-final.
