Boosted by a brilliant start which left them leading by 2-2 to 0-0 with just nine minutes gone on the clock, St Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh overcame neighbouring rivals Mostrim in the Ladies Football Minor ‘A’ Championship Final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday last.
St Brigid’s Gaels, Ardagh . . . 4-6 Mostrim . . . 0-6
The crucial goals were scored by Sian Gallagher and Ava Garcia and while Mostrim enjoyed plenty of possession during the remainder of the first half, they were unable to make it count on the scoreboard.
Garcia finished the ball to the back of the net after a shot from Maria Hayden hit the post and this significant setback left the Edgeworthstown girls facing a real uphill battle.
Captained by Isabelle Fay, Ardagh ended up leading by 2-4 to 0-3 at the break with Anna Hayden accounting for a brace of points (one free) while Claragh Shannon and Melissa O’Kane also got their names on the scoresheet.
The Mostrim points in the first half were registered by Cora Murphy, Mia Lynn and Elle Lynn and while they tried hard to get back in contention on the changeover, Ardagh consolidated their tight grip on the game.
St Brigid’s Gaels added another 2-2 to their tally in the second half to run out comfortable winners with the goals coming from talented midfielder Sian Gallagher and substitute Rachel Keenan.
The points were scored by Anna Hayden and Keeva Gillen (a great strike) and this was a fine overall performance by the better-balanced Ardagh team who are growing in strength after winning the Junior Championship title last year.
Mostrim created a number of scoring chances in the second half but the best they could manage was consolation points from Cora Murphy, Ava Kane and Ella Reilly.
