Junior ‘A’ county champions Young Grattans are the last Longford football team still standing in the Leinster Club Championships following their great 1-9 to 0-7 win away against Wexford opponents Fr O Regans Craanford at St Patrick’s Park in Enniscorthy on Saturday last.
Gary Hand scored the crucial goal and the Stonepark side are back on the road this Saturday with a trip to Newbridge to face the Kildare champions Ellistown in the Leinster Junior Club quarter-final at Manguard Park, throw-in 3.30pm.
The Ellistown club (situated close to Rathangan) were fortunate to get past the Westmeath champions Castletown-Finea in a very low scoring battle (0-5 to 0-4) in Kinnegad on Saturday and Grattans will be quietly confident of causing an upset, spurred on by their enthusiastic supporters.
There was no joy for the other Longford clubs in Leinster club action last weekend with Abbeylara losing out (3-14 to 2-8) to the Louth champions St Mary’s in Ardee while Fr Manning Gaels also had to settle for second best in a close call (1-11 to 0-11) against Crettyard (Laois) in the Intermediate Round 1 clash at O’Moore Park.
The Longford senior hurling title winners Wolfe Tones Mostrim enter the provincial championship at the quarter-final stage on Saturday November 16 at home against Moorefield (Kildare) or Castletown Liam Mellows (Wexford).
