Some more silverware was collected by St Mary’s Granard this season with their Junior footballers snatching a last gasp win over unfortunate Carrickedmond in the ‘B’ Championship final replay at Emmet Park in Killoe on Thursday night.
St Mary’s Granard . . . 1-9 Carrickedmond . . . 1-8
Carrick came storming back to wipe out a four-point deficit with time running out, thanks to a goal and a point from frees converted by their powerful midfielder Michael Higgins, and a draw and extra-time was looking certain but there was another twist in the dramatic finish.
In a sweeping attack the ball ended up in the path of Brian Sheridan and the long serving St Mary’s defender kept his composure to fire over a wonderful score approaching the fifth minute of stoppage time to settle the title decider.
Referee Frank Toher (35 years serving as a diligent match official) blew the final whistle seconds later to signal another success for Granard with their seniors winning the Division 1 league title this year while their U-16 footballers are through to the ‘A’ Championship final against Clonguish.
A deserving winner of the player of the match award in the Junior ‘B’ final was promising young Granard centre-half-back Enda Masterson.
While Carrickedmond suffered the bitter disappointment of defeat they have really only themselves to blame after squandering several scoring chances in the first half.
