Carrickedmond appeal controversial Longford SFC exit but quarter-finals scheduled to go ahead

Despite the fact that Mullinalaghta have been awarded the win against Carrickedmond in the current Senior Football Championship controversy following the unanimous decision by the Longford GAA Competitions Control Committee (CCC), the South Longford club are appealing the decision. 

While Carrickedmond are preparing to present their case that will be lodged to the Leinster GAA Hearings Committee, the Longford CCC are sticking to the schedule of playing the revised quarter-finals at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this weekend and are adamant that the four games will go ahead.   

As it stands in the aftermath of the Longford CCC hearing, Carrickedmond are eliminated from the championship with Dromard now playing the title holders Killoe instead in the last 8. 

That match is fixed for Saturday evening, followed by the clash of Clonguish and Colmcille.

The other two quarter-finals - Mullinalaghta v St Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara v Rathcline -  are down for decision on Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether the games will be played this weekend due to the Carrickedmond appeal.      

To make matters worse for Carrick, they are now scheduled to meet Longford Slashers in  an ‘extra’ relegation play-off this Saturday night as both clubs finished deadlock on four points in the table and cannot be separated with their clash in the group stage ending in a draw and identical scores.

The winners play Kenagh and the losers meet Mostrim to determine which two clubs are demoted to the Intermediate Championship. 

Representatives from both St Columba’s and Carrickedmond were in attendance at the hearing on Friday night last in the Secretary’s office in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park that lasted over 3 hours.  

Mullinalaghta were of the firm belief that they won the recent Group B clash at Leo Casey Park by a point, 2-12 to 2-11. 

However, referee David Tiernan deemed on that dramatic evening in Ballymahon that the crunch fixture in the so called ‘group of death’ ended in a draw (2-12 to 2-12) but noted at the bottom of his report to the County Board that the scoreline should have stated: 2-12 to 2-11, and thus a win for Mullinalaghta.
