The Longford senior footballers are going through a torrid season so far and after losing to Kildare and Leitrim there is one last chance for the under pressure manager Paddy Christie and his players to keep alive their outside chance of reaching the knockout stage of the Tailteann Cup.
A wide margin win over bottom of the table Waterford is required in the crunch clash at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise on Saturday (2pm start) and even at that the midlanders are depending on results in the other three groups working out in their favour.
It remains to be seen whether Longford (without the injured Michael Quinn) can save their season but if they do manage to survive in the Tier 2 Championship for a little longer a difficult away fixture awaits in the preliminary quarter-final the following weekend.
The home defeat against Leitrim was hard to take and thus Longford are not in control of their own destiny with the worst third placed team (currently occupied by Christie’s strugglers) making their exit from the Tailteann Cup to make way for New York.
The draw for the Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-finals will take place around 5:40pm on Sunday evening on RTE Radio One.
