On the presumption that Laois will avoid a shock defeat against Waterford in Dungarvan and thus prevent a three-way scores difference situation at the top of the table, Longford will be promoted to Division 3 if they win away to Wexford on Sunday next!
If those results materialise in the tense and exciting climax to the Division 4 league campaign then a victory for Leitrim at home to Tipperary will not be good enough for the neighbouring rivals who will end up losing out to Longford on the head-to-head regulation.
Leitrim kept their promotion hopes alive with an excellent comeback win over Laois at O’Moore Park on Saturday last and are now depending on Wexford getting a positive result against Longford.
While Wexford scored a big win over what was basically a second string Tipperary side on Sunday and are currently second in the table on the strength of their superior scores difference, their hopes of making the move up to Division 3 next season rest on a Leitrim slip in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Wexford will finish on ten points if they defeat Longford but the head-to-head rule is in favour of Leitrim should they come out on top against Tipperary.
Quite a few permutations but the bottom line is that Longford must win at Wexford Park on Sunday (throw-in 1pm) in the quest for promotion and that is going to be a difficult task.
Led by vastly experienced defender Glen Malone and the emergence of rising young star Padraic Hughes, Wexford are making steady progress under the guidance of their former quality attacker John Hegarty and will want to finish the league campaign with a flourish.
The added bonus for the two promoted counties is a Croke Park appearance in the Division 4 title decider on Saturday March 30 and hopefully Longford can get the win they need at Wexford Park.
