In the aftermath of the early exits for Slashers, Clonguish and St Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh from the respective ladies football competitions the previous weekend, along with the defeat for the Clonguish Gaels hurlers, there was more bad news for the Longford clubs competing at provincial level.
The Leinster wipe out was complete as Killoe, Kenagh and Ballymore all fell at the first hurdle and particularly disappointing was the demise of Emmet Og in the Senior quarter-final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday last.
The general opinion was that Killoe had a chance of springing a surprise against St Loman’s Mullingar but it failed to materialise as the rampant Westmeath champions cruised to a comprehensive win by the wide margin of ten points.
Kenagh, to their credit, were a point in front at half-time against the strongly fancied Meath side Rathkenny in the Leinster Intermediate Championship but gradually drifted out of contention on the changeover with seven points (3-11 to 1-10) separating the sides in the finish at Pearse Park on Saturday last.
Spare a thought for the Longford Junior champions Ballymore who failed to register a solitary score in the first half of their clash against Kilbeggan (Westmeath) and were well beaten on a 4-6 to 2-2 scoreline at The Downs GAA grounds.
As it turned out, the only Longford team to record a victory in the current Leinster Club Championships was the St Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh ladies who crushed the poor challenge of Crettyard (Laois) in the opening round of the Junior competition.
