St Mary’s Granard maintained their impressive unbeaten run in Group 1 of the Senior Football Championship when they produced a fabulous finish to sink Longford Slashers in the exciting Round 3 clash at McGee Park in Aughnacliffe on Saturday evening last.
St Mary’s Granard . . . 2-13 Longford Slashers . . . 3-8
Second half goals from Tadhg McNevin, Cian O’Nuallain and Andy Dalton, the latter on target in the 57th minute, appeared to have won the match for Slashers who led by three points (3-8 to 1-11) when Darragh O’Connell shot over the bar for their last score.
But gritty Granard just refused to accept defeat and registered 1-2 in stoppage time to come out on top in a frantic end to a cracking second half.
Jamie Brady Hynes blasted the ball to the back of the net to level matters and a point apiece from the prominent Kiernan brothers James and Harry clinched a crucial win for St Mary’s.
Slashers are now in big trouble after also losing to Clonguish and need positive results in their remaining group fixtures against Mostrim and Dromard in the hope of reaching the quarter-finals.
