Longford captured the coveted Fr Manning Cup for the 11th time with James Hagan firing over the winning point in the fourth minute of stoppage time in a frantic finish to the U-16 football tournament final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday last.
Longford . . . 1-7 Leitrim . . . 0-9
Defences were on top throughout this tight contest and while Leitrim took the lead when their chief marksman Joey McBrien converted a free in the 55th minute, the game swung in favour of Longford moments later when attacking defender Alan Mimnagh pounced on the breaking ball to score a well-taken goal.
Leitrim refused to be rattled and extra-time was looming when full-forward McBrien landed a brace of points (frees) to leave the sides all square with time running out.
But there was one last twist in the tale and Clonguish player Hagan kept his composure to shoot the winning point from close range.
It was a tremendous team effort from Longford with resolute corner-back Conor McHugh (Grattans) collecting the Tommy O’Brien memorial man of the match award.
Led by Enda McGahern, the other members of the Longford U-16 football management team are Ger Carberry, Dermot Reilly, Padraig Murtagh and Fintan Eager.
