Championship fever is gripping the country at this moment in time with so many games in the packed GAA fixtures programme and it is crunch time for the Longford teams who are in action this week.

Managed by Clonguish clubman Tony Devlin, the County minor (U-17) footballers are in major trouble after losing their first two games and must overcome Offaly in the remaining group stage fixture at O’Connor Park in Tullamore this Thursday evening (throw-in 7pm).

Even at that Longford are depending on a Laois win or draw against Kildare at O’Moore Park this Wednesday evening to keep alive their outside chance of survival in the Leinster Championship such is their inferior scores difference.

It is a more straight forward task for the Longford U-18 ladies football side who need to beat Meath at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this Wednesday evening (7.15pm) to qualify for the Leinster Minor ‘A’ Championship Final against Kildare. Otherwise, Pat Tiernan’s charges will drop back down into the ‘B’ championship semi-final.

The Longford ladies Intermediate football squad are at home to Wexford in the opening round of the Leinster Championship on Sunday (2pm) at a venue to be confirmed. This looks like a very tough task for Alan Mullen’s struggling side with Kildare and Carlow the other opponents in the group stage.

The last Longford team in championship action over the next few days are the county senior hurlers who meet Leitrim in a make or break match in Round 3 of the Lory Meagher Cup at Shane McGettigan Park in Drumshanbo on Sunday next, throw-in 2pm.

Adrian Moran’s men scored a great win at home to Warwickshire last weekend in giving the confidence factor a big boost in their bid to reach the final at Croke Park.
