While there was nothing at stake in the Leinster U-20 Football Championship Round 3 clash at Netwatch Cullen Park on Tuesday night with both counties already eliminated, Longford earned the consolation of a narrow win over Carlow in the remaining ‘dead rubber’ group stage fixture.

Longford . . . 1-8    Carlow . . . 0-9

Just two points separated the sides in the finish with Granard’s Micheal Hynes scoring the crucial only goal in the early stages of the game.

A shot for a point hit the upright and the rebound broke into the path of Jason Glancy with the Clonguish player directing the perfect pass to Hynes who flicked the ball to the net.

Longford ended up leading by 1-5 to 0-4 at the break and managed to withstand a determined comeback from Carlow in the second half.

Unlucky losers against the eventual table toppers Laois at O’Moore Park in the previous round and who were well beaten by Meath at Allen Park,  it was a spirited effort from Longford to qualify for the knockout stage of the provincial championship but it was not to be.
