Longford manager Paddy Christie was in a positive mood after his side won their second game in the O’Byrne Cup with the comfortable margin of 11 points to spare over a limited Carlow outfit at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday.

“It was a solid performance and we kicked some excellent scores against the gale force wind in the first half.

"A slightly disappointing aspect was our failure to score a goal with Keelin McGann going close to finding the back of the Carlow net late in the game.

“While Laois tried out some fringe players against us in the midweek fixture, our policy is to put out reasonably strong teams even though most of the counties are using the O’Byrne Cup for experimentation.

“We were keen to notch up a couple of wins and that has happened in two good performances. I’m happy with that but we are not getting carried away,” stated Christie when he spoke to the media after the Carlow game.

Looking ahead to the remaining group fixture against Meath in Ashbourne this Wednesday night (throw-in 8pm) and the opportunity to qualify for the O’Byrne Cup Final,  the realistic Longford manager knows his team are facing a difficult task.

“If Meath don’t put out a full team it will still be a huge challenge for us. They have a stronger group of lads and are playing in a higher division.

“No matter what sort of team that Meath decide to field, they will be hard beaten but hopefully we can get the result that we need to reach the final.

“If we can win the game it will be big progress for our group of players. This is a long term project and the Meath match is another step forward in the build up to the National League.”
