Several guest speakers will be involved in this day to discuss their expertise
On Tuesday, September 2 at 6.30 pm, Teagasc are holding a Suckler Farm Walk on the farm of Sean and Ann Murray, Cullyfad, Longford, N39TR20.
Sean runs a spring calving suckler to weanling system, selling all his calves in the mart from 10-12 months of age. Sean’s preferred cow type is a Limousin Cross cow sired to a Charolais stock bull. Sean buys in heifers as replacements and puts them in calf to his stock bull/AI.

The soil type on Sean’s farm is a mixture of clay and peat soil. Sean has 22 Hectares of grassland all in one block of ground. Sean is a member of the local suckler discussion which has helped him to make decisions with regards to calf health and management, breeding and grassland management.
Various topics will be discussed on the evening including the management of the calf at weaning; preparing weanlings for sale; weanling health coming into the autumn period; beef market outlook and also schemes such as SCEP, Beef Welfare and TAMS.
There will be various guest speakers who will give their expertise on these topics including a local vet, mart manager and advisors from the Longford office.
