Drumlish ceremony honours Longford's Mike Prunty

Longford County Council will dedicate a memorial bench to the late Mike Prunty at Corn Hill, Drumlish, on Tuesday, August 19 at 4pm.

The ceremony honours a man who spent over six decades championing Longford causes across the Atlantic. Mike Prunty, who passed away on December 9, 2024, served as President of the County Longford Association of Greater New York for the longest period in its 133-year history. Mike also held roles as an Officer in the Ancient Order of Hibernians and as President of the United Irish Counties.

Born in Ballincurry, Drumlish, in 1940, Mike emigrated to New York in 1959. He became a cornerstone of the Irish community, helping countless emigrants secure employment whilst encouraging them to join Longford sporting and cultural organisations.

The memorial bench sits at Corn Hill, Drumlish County Longford's highest point and popular walking route, offering panoramic views across the midlands. The ancient landscape features two cairns (passage tombs), creating a contemplative setting for visitors to remember one of Longford's most devoted sons.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, "This tribute recognises a man who never forgot his roots. Mike opened his doors to footballers, dignitaries, and young people seeking opportunity. His legacy bridges two continents."
