There has being great changes in Longford Macra, with one new club up and running and a second new club about to be launched. Gerard Butler launched a new Macra club in Legan and it has being a huge success with over 30 people signing up on the night. A committee was voted in and they started planning for the year ahead with lots of competitions to pick from. A group from North Longford have also put the wheels in motion for setting up a club in the region; it will cover Drumlish, Granard, Colmcille and the surrounding areas. Of course Longford Town Macra is always open to new members all year round.
Macra has much to offer its members, in your membership package you will receive a voucher for FBD Insurance, discounts with Xtra-Vision and DID Electrical and much more. There is a huge range of activities ranging from sports to drama and farm skills to weekends away. It is a great way to meet new people from all over Ireland and you never know, you might meet the love of your life.
Macra also gives advice on all areas for young farmers at local, national and international levels and has joined the IFA in protests over CAP. But don’t worry Macra is not just for farmers with 60% of members not farming at all.
The last competition Longford took part in was Mr and Mrs Culchie in Galway. We were represented by David Whitford and Christine Twaddle. Dressed in their culchie clothes, they took part in footing turf on the dance floor, a wheel-barrow race and some jiving. Although we didn’t take home prizes we had a great time and can’t wait until next year.
