Momentum builds for Morgan’s campaign

‘A vote for Morgan is a vote for Longford’.

That was the simple, but at the same time powerful message delivered by Longford’s only candidate in next week’s all-important by-election campaign on Monday evening.

James Morgan uttered what was his first real volley of note ahead of next Friday’s polling day in front of supporters and close friends at Esquires Coffee House.

The father of four said for all his relative inexperience when it came to politics, he possessed an impressive CV upon which voters could trust.

Testament to that, he said, is the continued development of Longford town’s N4 Axis Centre.

“If you told me last Monday I was running in the Longford-Westmeath by-election, I would have said you were joking,” he told the large assembled crowd.

“I have a track record of bringing jobs to Longford with over 150 jobs in full and part time in the Axis Centre alone.”

As a businessman himself, the chartered accountant said there were few who could rival a career largely based on job creation and goal getting.

“I run my own business and I know the issues (businesses are facing).

I deal with small and medium sized businesses in Longford and Westmeath as well so I know what’s required.”

Knowing what’s needed and following through on those kinds of promises is the focal point of Mr Morgan’s campaign.

Equally, the Longford businessman showed during his address on Monday evening that he can tap into the minds of voters.

“I will not be muzzled,” he said defiantly, citing the closure of Connolly Barracks in 2009.

“First and foremost I live in Longford, I work in Longford and I spend my money in Longford.”

Itwas a statement which clearly met the approval of those watching on.

Mr Morgan’s business colleague, Gerry Cooke was just as forthright despite admitting he was somewhat taken aback by his long time friend’s decision to enter the political fray.

“When I look back, I shouldn’t have been surprised because that sums up what James does.

“He has a proven track record for getting things done.

“This is a great opportunity to elect a local candidate so let’s not let it slip,” he said.

But it was perhaps fitting the final note was left to the man leading that charge in nine days time.

“Let me tell you all this, I am not a party man, I am a Longford man,” Mr Morgan concluded.
