Delighted Fine Gael Senator Micheál Carrigy hailed his party's top class candidates as according to tallies they topped the poll in all three municipal districts in county Longford.

Gerry Hagan (Longford Municipal District) 1,051
Paul Ross (Ballymahon Municipal District) 1,300
Garry Murtagh (Granard Municipal District) 1,438

Fine Gael mopped up 58.7% of the vote in the Granard Municipal District and Senator Carrigy said it was the highest vote for FG in any electoral area in the country and that they looked to capturing a 4th seat in that MD - with Garry Murtagh, Paraic Brady and Colin Dalton, poised to be joined by Padraig McNamara.
