On February 17, Longford Scouts will be going to Backstage Theatre for the Tom Crean Show. There, “Tom Crean” will present the Scouts with their Crean Awards, which will be a great opportunity to showcase the great achievements of the young people Scouting in Longford.

Tom Crean (pictured), the intrepid Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley.

The explorer was from Kerry, and his story is described as a testament of human fortitude.

The awards are named after the expeditions that Tom Crean took part in: the Discovery Award; the Terra Nova Award; the Endurance Award and the Polar Award. Scouts earn these through various activities, such as community and environmental projects. The Patrol Leaders Council decides if a Scout has qualified for an award.

The recipients of the Discovery Awards are Franek, Lev and TJ. Terra Nova recipients are Aaron, Krystian, Lorcan and Mark. There are 3 groups for Girls and Boys in Longford. Beavers is 6-8 years; Cubs is 9-11 years and Scouts 12-15.

They meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and can be contacted through their Facebook page “Longford Scouts-Ireland”.

About future plans throughout the year, Peter Gleeson said the following:

“We’ve have huge plans. From local camps to a contingent in Longford. There are four Scouts and one Scouter is heading to World Scout Jamboree in Poland in 2027. There are 40,000 scouts all over the world. We’re making preparations for that. We’ll be widely publicising that.”
