Matty is dead, but it is not as bad as it sounds. There is no need to be sad, he says, sure he did not have much going for himself in the first place. He’s no big loss... Matty recounts his last day alive, over and over, telling us contradicting stories about a life that was already falling apart.
McCarthy’s irreverent story is about love and longing, and a young man making sense of his life on the day that he dies. 'He Dies in the End' is a time-bending, funny and heartfelt piece of new writing, and a riff on time and potential.
Performed by Darren Yorke (last year’s winner of the Dublin Fringe Special Judge’s Award) and written by Liam McCarthy (whose play ‘Jilly Morgan’s Birthday Party’ is currently enjoying an Arts Council funded National Tour.) 'He Dies in the End' is produced by Jenni Little with production design by Emily Waters.
The play is Supported by Backstage Theatre, Irish Theatre Institute (ITI) and Dublin Fringe. To attend, tickets cost €15, and can be purchased via the Backstage Theatre website.
Darren studied a BA in Drama and Theatre Studies in Trinity College Dublin, and originally wanted to become a primary school teacher. It was when the Backstage Youth Group led him down the path that he is on now. He is the son of Longford early years educators.
He has also helped discover Vancouver TheatreSports, where he is said to have trained, performed served as Education & Outreach Coordinator from 2014 to 2016. With a vast and successful career in the performing arts, 'He Dies in the End' promises to be a worthwhile experience for all theatre enthusiasts.
Liam McCarthy is an award-winning playwright and will be in residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais.

Liam said: “The play is called 'He Dies in the End' and is a captivating and funny new play about a young man making sense of his life on the day that he dies. A story of love, loss and grief as Matty finds meaning in his life by reliving his last day on Earth again and again.”
