Ann O’Leary has been contributing to the Longford community in a massive way by initiating a Longford Disability Community Disco. After recognising that other children have a disco, she decided to take it upon herself to make it possible for the likes of her son, his friends and more. All are invited to attend.

The latest disco will take place on Sunday, August 3 at the Longford Arms Hotel. It is from 2 to 4pm and is free entry.

“It is for the disability community in Longford and beyond. It’s not restricted to Longford town. Adults, kids, children, wheelchair users and siblings are welcome to come along. Anybody with young kids as well.”

Organising it herself with the assistance of her sister, there have been three previous discos. All of them have brought major enjoyment to the attendees, who were said to have danced for the full four hours during the last disco.

The disco came about when her son, Ben, who attends St Christopher’s, had a birthday party and brought his friends. When realising that there are no discos for disabled kids, Ann has taken it upon herself to throw a disco for them to enjoy. Ann added that the children often ask her when their next disco is.

I make up the poster on my computer and put it around town, Facebook and schools. Hopefully, other schools will tell parents,” she said.

Ultimately, Ann hopes to have more discos in the future to make them an annual part of the calendar.

“I’d like to have one at the end of the summertime; October for Halloween and Christmas with Santa. That would be my aim. A couple during the summer as they’re off.”

Everybody is welcome to attend, and there is an optional donation bucket by the door for those who would like to give something. All proceeds go towards sweets and anything required for the next disco. As Ann is not a charity and organises this herself, support is most appreciated.
