Met Éireann pinpoints return of 'high pressure' over Ireland in stunning forecast

Met Éireann has pinpointed the day high pressure will once again dominate Ireland's weather in a more upbeat forecast.

The prediction comes after days of mixed weather following a largely dry and sunny June Bank Holiday weekend. Some areas saw frost early on Wednesday morning, while others saw a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, heavy at times.

The rest of this week looks mixed too but the sun will break through from time to time. It's early next week our weather fortunes change again, but it may only be for a couple of days.

In its latest forecast, Met Éireann said Thursday will bring "a mix of cloud and sunny spells with further scattered showers. The showers will be most frequent in Ulster, where a few may be heavy. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in light to moderate westerly breezes."

The forecast continues: "Showers will become increasingly isolated on Thursday evening and night and it will be mainly dry with clear spells for a time. Cloud will increase from the Atlantic overnight with patchy rain and drizzle developing in Atlantic coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in light southwest or variable breezes.

"Mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading eastwards on Friday morning. Brightening up in the afternoon and evening with the rain and drizzle becoming patchier. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in light to moderate west to northwest breezes, increasing fresh near northern and northwestern coasts. Varying cloud amounts and some clear spells on Friday night with scattered showers. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in light to moderate west to northwest breezes.

"Saturday looks set to be a bright day with variable cloud and sunny spells. There'll be further showers though, these most frequent in the north and northwest, where they may be heavy. The showers will be more isolated elsewhere. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in mostly moderate northwest breezes which will be fresher near northern and northwestern coasts. Showers look likely to continue to affect the north and northwest on Saturday night with long dry and clear spells developing elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in light to moderate west to northwest breezes.

"Current indications for Sunday suggest a mix of sunny spells and showers. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in light to moderate northerly breezes."

Beyond that and looking at early next week, Met Éireann's forecast picks up a little with a prediction for "high pressure centred to the west or southwest in the Atlantic."

They say this "may play a more dominant role in our weather, at least for a time, early next week. Generally benign conditions with some sunshine seem probable though a few showers can't be ruled out at this stage."
