The achievement of Longford Slashers ladies team was acknowledged at the December meeting of Longford County Council.

Cathaoirleach Turlough McGovern led the tributes to the successful team.

The Slashers ladies claimed the title of All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship victors when they handsomely dispatched Mullinahone in the currentaccount.ie decider at Croke Park. The historic win at GAA HQ made Slashers the first Longford Gaelic football team to claim national success at adult club level.

“I want to compliment them on their achievement,” Cllr McGovern said, “They can't win any more this year. They got a great reception on the Saturday they came home. Anyone with a bit of back bone and Longford blood who saw the pipe band coming down the street on that cold evening will have been filled with pride.

“It's a credit to the girls. Even in the cold only half of them had togged in. The reception they got was incredible. I hope the celebrations are still going on. It is great for the club and it is great for our county. We have an All-Ireland win here in the county and we should be very proud of them.”

The chamber members added their voices to the praise for the All-Ireland winners.
