People across Longford have an opportunity to see some of stars of Irish rugby put through their paces as Leinster preparations for a new season take them to home of rugby in the county.
There is great excitement in Longford Rugby Club as Leinster Rugby will pay a visit on August 5. The current Heineken Cup Champions will hold the open training session in Longford Rugby Club Friday the from 11am.
It will be a great chance to witness a professional team training and see players such as European Player of the Year Ica Nacewa, Richardt Strauss, who qualifies for Ireland this year and the like of Ireland stars Devon Toner, Kevin McLaughlin, Fionn Carr, Jamie Hagan and David Kearney.
One of the Leinster team is no stranger to Longford. Openside Flanker Shane Jennings made many a trek down the N4 in his youth: “My mother’s maiden name is O’Hara and she is from Longford, she was born and raised there. We still have family there, my uncle Sean O’Hara is a member of Longford Rugby Club. I still have aunties and uncles and a Grandmother living there. So the links are quite strong,” the two-time Heineken Cup winner told www.longfordleader.ie this week.
It is an exciting time for Irish rugby. Four games over the coming weeks will determine the squad for the World Cup. The build up to the August internationals is a bit like a six nations and the Leinster flanker said that commitment is high: “Everyone is going to be gunning to try and get selected for the World Cup. So the standard is going to be very high. The games are going to be very physical and playing at this time of the year it is going to be very tough, particularly the away games against France and Scotland.
Everyone want to be involved we just have to see what kind of a team is picked.”
A recent trip to Mullingar saw over 3,000 spectators turn out. This a free event. Don’t miss your chance to see and meet the Leinster Squad in Longford RFC at what is the only opening training session outside Dublin.
