Longford Town came so close to picking up a point in the Airtricity League First Division clash at Turner’s Cross on Friday night with the red-hot title favourites Cork City snatching a late winner.
Cork City . . . 2 Longford Town . . . 1
The table toppers broke the deadlock in the 64th minute through a deflected strike from Seani Maguire but Longford were looked good for what would have been a terrific draw when substitute Stefan Ugbesia scored in the 79th minute, only for the same player to be penalised soon after for a hand ball in the box in a cruel blow.
Cork were subsequently awarded a penalty, which was brilliantly saved by the Town keeper Kian Moore to deny Maguire a second goal, but the ball broke with Charlie Lyons reacting the quickest to finish the rebound to the net in the 86th minute.
It was rough justice on the midlanders who had battled bravery for a positive result in front of the 2,446 attendance but hopefully it will come right against Wexford FC at Bishopsgate on Saturday night next, kick-off 7.30pm.
