South county Longford’s Cashel GAA Club is ready for the first round of this year’s Celebrity Banisteoir – The Rivals. The match, which will take place at Cashel GAA grounds on Sunday September 2 next, will see Rozanna Purcell’s Longford side face Jessica Lawlor’s men from Ballinora GAA Club, Waterfall, County Cork.
Just under 1,000 people are anticipated to attend the event, which organisers have promised will be a day to remember.
Such is the fervour building up in this year’s competition that Cashel Celebrity Banisteoir, Rozanna Purcell, has declared she will wear her bikini to training sessions if her lads score a win in this first round game.
Speaking on the Ray D’Arcy Show recently, the Tipperary model told the nation “it’s a bit of motivation. We have to win.”
The 22-year-old beauty queen earned a home draw earlier this month (August 14) against Jessica Lawlor, partner of soccer star Stephen Ireland. The match has been dubbed ‘the battle of the babes’ in a series that pits famous faces from the same celebrity world against each other.
Referring to Cashel GAA club, Rozanna told Ray D’Arcy, “They are the love of my life, all 32 of them. I’m having an absolute ball with it. It has made me realise GAA is the heart and soul of Ireland and it is a religion for many people.
“I don’t want to let them down. They all made me feel very welcome. I used to play a bit of GAA in my day and so did my dad. I knew a few bits about it and the lads have been amazing on filling me in on the rest.”
On Sunday September 2, match commentary will be provided by the legendary Micheal O’Muircheartaigh. Entry is free to the game but souvenir programmes will cost €5. Entry to the car parking area costs €3 per car, with the village being the main car park area. For further information visit www.newtowncashel.ie.
The other pairings in the new series feature X Factor singer Mary Byrne versus The Voice runner up Richie Hayes; reality TV stars Paddy Doherty and Calum Best; and a Mr and Mrs match-up as Pippa O’Connor takes on TV presenter husband, Brian Ormond.
