Delaney family, Drinan, Ballymahon will host this year’s County Longford ploughing festival and family field day

The 2025 Longford Ploughing Championships take place on Sunday, March 23 at Drinan, Ballymahon.

At a recent meeting in Skelly's Ballymahon, ploughing chairperson Barry White congratulated the Delaney family, Drinan, who will host this year’s ploughing festival and family field day.

The venue is on the outskirts of Ballymahon, near a popular scenic walking trail along the banks of the Royal Canal.

This is the first ploughing match in the Ballymahon area in over a decade as Ita, David and Des Mulvihill last hosted the event in 2011 and 2012.

On Tuesday, March 12, 1933, the very first County Longford Ploughing match took place in Mr John Roche’s field, near Ballymahon.

Over the next four years the fledgling event remained in the Ballymahon area with Thomas McCann Terlicken hosting in 1934, Ned Mulvihill Ballymulvey in 1935, Hugh Garahan Ballymahon in 1936 and then in 1937 the host farmer was Johnny McCormack from Moigh.

Who among them could ever have dreamed that the cradle of cultivation they pulled together  would grow into the ploughing festival and field day we have now?

The flagship event on the Delaney family farm is just eight weeks away. Preparations continue on Tuesday night February 4 at a meeting in ‘The Canal Turn' at 8.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to come along and meet the organising committee who are gearing up for an exciting return to Ballymahon.
