Transition year students of St Mel’s College
The Transition year students of St Mel’s College, under the keen direction of Mickey Kenny, bring the hilarious comedy ‘A Wake in the West’ to Backstage Theatre next Wednesday, May 8.
The play centres on the wake of Tom Healy, a man known to be ‘fond of the drop’. After a life devoted to alcohol it's no surprise Tom’s last wish is to be buried in the drink, at sea that is.
Tom wishes for a watery grave after his cremation, with the scattering of his ashes at sea. The comedy begins when a neighbour decides that Tom is not entitled to take it all with him.
It creates chaos in the house and parish. Mourners pour into Tom’s parlour, but not all come to pay their respects.
The staging of ‘A Wake in the West’ is part of a very broad ranging, busy and vibrant Transition Year programme at St Mel’s College, that includes weekly work experience ventures, community volunteer work and modules that broaden and enhance the skill set of students.
‘A Wake in the West’ is the first theatre project and performance put on by the school in a number of years.
It's not the first performance of the school year for some of the cast. Some members joined the cast of St Christopher’s Services in a hugely successful production of ‘Cinderella’ in Backstage last December.
This demonstrates the calibre of student that represents St Mel’s College Transition Year Programme.
This show will be staged at Backstage Theatre, next Wednesday, May 8, commencing at 8:00pm. Tickets are just €10 and can be booked on the Backstage Theatre Website or by phoning the theatre.
