Members of Longford Municipal District bid farewell to Longford County Council Senior Executive Engineer, Eamon Bennett, as he attended his last official MD meeting.
Mr Bennett is due to retire this month. Cllr Gerry Hagan led the tributes to the retiring local authority official: “Eamon has given the council a lifetime of service. You will be very much missed. You always explained every issue that was raised. I hope you and your family enjoy many years of health and happiness in your retirement.
“No more than myself you are a great GAA man, you will now move them to attend to those matters. Particularly to support the Rossies, and the Naomh Barraigh club in Tarmonbarry,”
Cllr Gerry Warnock joined in the farewell wishes to the retiring Senior Executive Engineer: “Not only has it been a pleasure working with Eamon since 2013 when he came over to Longford, but I have known Eamon as a work colleague for the last 23 years. He is always a gentleman. A very popular man all around, he can talk about absolutely everything.
“I wish you and your family the best in your well deserved retirement. I'm sure you will make great use of the season ticket to Old Trafford to support Man Utd.”
Cllr Seamus Butler added: “I would like to be associated with all the remarks. Eamon, you were our lifeline. You always responded with respect to the elected members. What could be done was done and couldn't be done was explained at length why it couldn't be done. I wish you an active retirement,” he said, “Job well done, enjoy your retirement.
Cllr Peggy Nolan said: “I simply want to say thank you. Thank you for your professionalism in your job, thank you for your kindness. Any time I rang it was help and support. You always did your very best, and have left the county in a better way and you did make a difference.”
Mr Bennett thanked all the councillors for their well wishes: “In the end we got an awful lot done in Longford MD. You can be very proud of the achievement in the 10 years I am here. Similarly I would like to wish you success in the near future, especially those of you who are going forward in the elections.”
