There is considerable local opposition to the wind farm proposals
Longford County Council has granted planning permission to Bord na Móna for the retention of a wind monitoring mast in Longford.
The mast, which measures 100 metres in height, is located at Lough Bannow Bog in Derrynaskea.
Bord na Móna made the application to continue the use of the existing wind mast for a further period of three years last October, with the planning department reaching a decision last week.
The application was in the name of Bord na Mona Powergen Limited. The Semi-State body is proposing to develop a wind farm on Derryadd Bog, located in south Longford. Derryadd bog is adjacent to the communities of Derraghan, Keenagh, Killashee and Lanesborough. The proposed development will be known as Derryadd Wind Farm.
The approved application is for the continued use of an existing guyed wind monitoring mast, with instruments, 100m in height for a further period of three years.
Bord na Móna says the purpose of the mast is to “assess the suitability of the company's adjacent lands for the development of a wind turbine”.
