Storm damage continues to disrupt

Last week homes across the county were coming to terms with the aftermath of Storm Debi, but for some the difficulties continued.

When the storm hit gusts of 115 km/h, and sustained wind speeds above 70 km/h, torrential rain, high tides and a storm surge battered the country.

Form many Longford homes the disruption to power supplies continued until Tuesday evening.

One Longford woman Phyllis York, who lives in Lisbreac Terrace, has not been able to move her car since the storm.

Phyllis has mobility issues, and since a tree fell across the access point to the rear of her home she was unable to move her car.

“My car is parked at the rear of the house, because I have no steps at the back,” Phyllis told the Leader, “ So I normally use the back, but the tree has fallen across the drive way and I am now trapped.”

Phyllis has contacted the council, but the local authority say it is noting to do with them.

Longford Fire Service attended and removed part of the tree from the public walkways, but the driveway remains blocked: “They cut from Pearse View, but they left the debris on my side. Nobody has taken responsibility for it.”

Phyllis says she is at her wits end: “My passage out is blocked. If this continues I will probably have to ask for a room at St Lomans. It is having a serious affect on my mental health.”
