A woman who appeared before last week’s sitting of Longford District Court charged under the Theft & Fraud Offences Act was convicted and fined €500 following a hearing into the matter.
Helen Doran (29) Of No Fixed Abode appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes charged with stealing items to the value of €10 from Corrigan’s Service Station, Legga, Moyne, Co Longford on May 5, 2017.
She was also further charged with obtaining fuel to the value of €30 and making off without payment on the same date.
Outlining the evidence to the court, Garda Yvonne Glacken said that on the date in question the defendant entered the store in Moyne and proceeded to place a number of items in a basket.
“She then left the shop without paying for the goods,” the Garda continued.
“Ms Doran then filled her car with petrol and left the area without paying for the fuel.
“She made no effort at the time to pay for either the goods or the petrol.”
Meanwhile, in mitigation, the defendant’s solicitor Bríd Mimnagh said her client’s husband had been driving the car at the time of the incident.
The court was told that he had subsequently died following injuries he received in a road traffic collision.
“Ms Doran is currently serving a sentence in respect of another matter,” Ms Mimnagh continued.
“She has three children and her mother is looking after them at the moment.
“She was on drugs at the time and in a different place but since her husband’s death Ms Doran has had to take stock of herself.”
Following his deliberations on the matter, Judge Hughes convicted the defendant and fined her €250 on each of the charges before him.
