Leaving one item outside your house increases burglary risk amid Garda warning

Gardaí have issued a warning and advice to Irish homes over one specific item after noticing an increase in burglaries in recent weeks.

A Garda statement read: "Following a review of the crime incidents over the last week we have seen a rise in domestic burglaries, we would encourage people to pay extra attention to their home security.

"Over 46% of domestic burglaries occur when the intruders gain entry to through the rear of the property via an open or unsecure door or window. Some of the recent burglaries in the county have occurred during day light.

They issued specific advice on ladders. "Homeowner ladders have been used to gain access to properties. Ensure they are secured," the statement continued.

"Check your doors and windows for faults. Consult your PSA approved local locksmith who can offer you good advice.

"Ensure sheds and garages are locked with a security grade padlock.

"If you have an alarm, make sure you use it and that it is in good working order. Consider extending it your shed or outhouses.

"Review the lighting at your property. Early evenings are also common times for burglaries.

"A burglary is a an impactful crime and we would urge people to report any persons or vehicles that are out of place in your localities. Check in on vulnerable neighbours," they concluded.
