Tributes paid to Carlow pensioner killed in crash involving car and bicycle

The cyclist, a man in his 60s who was killed in a crash on Easter Sunday, has been named locally as Gar Fennelly of Bennekerry, Co Carlow

A 'kind and gentle soul': Tributes paid to Carlow cyclist killed in crash

A Carlow pensioner who was struck by a car and killed while cycling on Easter Sunday has been remembered as a "kind and gentle soul" and "a lovely man".

Gar Fennelly of Rutland Terrace, Bennekerry, Co Carlow, was killed in a collision that took place on Easter Sunday, March 31, at Knocknagee in Co Kildare, close to Carlow Town.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the incident, however Mr Fennelly was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken Naas General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Tributes have poured out for Mr Fennelly, with many people remembering him as a kind and gentle soul.

"So very sorry to hear this sad and tragic news," one message posted on Rip.ie read.

"Gar was a lovely man, the gentlest of souls. May he rest in eternal peace. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and neighbours".

"Condolences to the Fennelly family on your sad loss, Garry was a gentleman, may he rest in peace," another message read.

Mr Fennelly will be "sadly missed" by his brothers and sisters Rita, Joe, Pauline, Danny, Patricia, Teresa, Thomas and Jenny, his step brothers and sisters Georgina, Ernie, Mavis, Eugene and Martin, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncle Johnny, his nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family, neighbours, friends and especially his hunting friends.

He will repose at McGuill's Funeral Home, Bennekerry, R93 E5N7 on Wednesday ,April 3, from 4.00p.m. concluding with Prayers at 7.30p.m.

Removal will take place on Thursday morning, April 4, to St. Mary's Church, Bennekerry, arriving for Funeral Mass at 11.00a.m. followed by burial in adjoining cemetery. The Funeral Mass can be viewed on the link here.
