Shane MacGowan's wife in new heartbreaking post just days after death of Pogues star

REACTION: See the heartfelt tributes flood Irish social media in tribute to Shane McGowan

The late Shane MacGowan

Shane MacGowan's wife has posted a heartfelt tribute to the Pogues star, hoping his smile can still help those struggling or in pain.

The legendary singer/songwriter died last week and is due to be buried in his native Tipperary on Friday.

Victoria Mary Clarke said her husband Shane was "always able to smile right until the last" and she hoped by sharing a post of him, it could still "work its magic".

The recent diagnosis that Shane was nearing the end of his life had shocked Victoria and his family and friends.

He was released from hospital and died shortly afterwards, surrounded by his family.

Noting that many people have recently lost love ones all around the world, Victoria Mary said her prayers were with everyone, "as Shane's would be".

Tributes have been paid from around the world for the former frontman of the Pogues who was regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation.

He left behind a brilliant collect of songs including the massive worldwide Christmas hit, Fairytale of New York, and so many other fantastic songs including A Pair of Brown Eyes and Rainy Night in Soho.
