A case in which former hurling star DJ Carey is accused of inducing people to pay him money after fraudulently claiming to have cancer is to go to trial in July 2025.
The 52-year-old former All-Ireland winning Kilkenny player appeared at the Criminal Courts of Justice briefly on Friday morning, wearing a navy jacket and a white shirt.
When the case was called, Circuit Court judge Orla Crowe asked if Carey was present in court, his defence barrister confirmed he was and Carey raised his hand to identify himself in the packed courtroom.
His defence barrister requested a trial date in relation to the multiple charges he faces.
The court was told that the trial was expected to last for three to four weeks, with a potential that it could take longer.
A trial date was set for July 2 2025.
Carey was remanded on bail until then, and the judge agreed to a request to change the Garda station where he is required to sign on.
Carey faces 21 charges under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act against multiple people that allegedly took place between January 1 2014 and December 31 2022.
He is accused of inducing several of them to pay him money by fraudulently claiming to have cancer and that he needed the money to obtain treatment.
Carey is one of the most acclaimed figures in GAA history, having won five All-Ireland titles and multiple All-Star awards.
